Remembering Anthony Yen

Anthony Yen (Yan Yuan Tai) was a prominent businessman and civic leader, renowned for his work in international trade, local charity, and US-China cultural exchange.
Cultural Leadership & The Chinese Cultural Garden
Anthony Yen’s most enduring physical legacy in Cleveland is his leadership of the Cleveland Chinese Cultural Garden. As founder and president of the Chinese Cultural Garden Association, he led the long effort to plan, secure land for, and construct the garden.
    • Design and Symbolism: Dedicated in 1985, the garden was a gift from Taipei and its business community. It was modeled after the Chinese Imperial Palace and carefully sited in Rockefeller Park to face the Cleveland Museum of Art, anchoring it near a world-class collection of Chinese art.
    • Key Features: The site is well known for its traditional imperial architecture, white marble railings, and a prominent statue of Confucius.

Educational Philanthropy & The Confucius Institute
  • Anthony served as Chairman of the Trustee Council of the Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University. Through CSU, he fostered cultural literacy, supported Mandarin language programs, and built civic partnerships between Northeast Ohio and international educators.
  • He established an annual Teacher Appreciation Day at the Chinese Cultural Garden in Cleveland, Ohio. He felt it was important for American society to formally recognize the dedication of teachers in the same way many Asian cultures do. In China, Teacher Appreciation Day is a major autumnal tradition celebrated in September to align with both the start of the new school year and the traditional birthday month of the ancient philosopher and teacher, Confucius. To replicate this cultural respect in Northeast Ohio, Yen spearheaded a regional version, which the Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University historically held on the last Friday of September.
Community Service and Business Advocacy
    • Global Business Development: Anthony leveraged his expertise as a member of the Board of Directors of the Cleveland World Trade Association and the Cleveland Institute of Art advisory board to keep Cleveland connected to global economic trends.
    • Civic Leadership: He has served as a prominent Chinese community leader and advocate, dedicating decades to local organizations such as the Asian Evergreen Housing Corporation, the Cleveland Chinese Senior Citizen Association, and  OCA Greater Cleveland.

Official Recognition

  • Anthony Yen was a recipient of the inaugural Distinguished Service Award in 1990 from OCAGC for his enduring leadership and service to the Chinese, Asian, and broader communities.
  • In honor of his 81st birthday and lifelong civic contributions, the City of Cleveland officially proclaimed October 5, 2013, as “Anthony Yen Day“.
  • For his lifetime of civic contributions, Anthony Yen was inducted into the Cleveland International Hall of Fame in 2012.
